CAMP FIRE USA WINS TOP NATIONAL AWARDS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE
PROJECTS
Local Camp Fire USA Councils Take First, Second and Third
Prizes in 31st Annual "Colgate Youth for America" Campaign
(Kansas City, Mo.) - Three local Camp Fire
USA clubs have won the top national awards in Colgate-Palmolive's
31st Annual search for the country's best community projects
by young Americans.
Camp Fire USA Central Coast Council's He
Wa Win Su Horizon Club in Arroyo Grande, Calif., created
a swimming instruction program for low-income students,
and their efforts have taken top honors in the 2004 "Colgate
Youth for America" campaign. The club was recognized with
a $1,000 first prize in the Camp Fire USA division.
Camp Fire USA First Texas Council's Club
Unity in Mansfield created a community club for families,
providing a support group for parents and offering activities
for families to spend time together. The club was recognized
with a $500 second prize in the Camp Fire USA division.
Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council Teens in
Action members in St. Paul taught age-appropriate self-reliance
lessons-such as safety, self-care, self-esteem, conflict-resolution
and leadership development-and served as role models to
elementary school students. The group was recognized with
a $300 third prize in the Camp Fire USA division.
Each year, U.S. clubs and groups of six national
youth organizations – Camp Fire USA, Girl Scouts of the
USA, Boy Scouts of America, Girls Incorporated, 4-H and
Boys & Girls Clubs of America – are invited to enter their
best community service projects for consideration. The effort
was launched by Colgate-Palmolive in 1973 to encourage community
involvement among young people and cash grants are awarded
for the best projects in each of the organizations annually.
The three top Camp Fire USA clubs' projects
were chosen from among more than 2,000 entries nationwide.
