CAMP FIRE USA SELECTED FOR SERVICE-LEARNING EMERGING LEADERS INITIATIVE
Kansas City, MO – Camp Fire USA has been selected to participate in the Service-Learning Emerging Leaders Initiative along with 22 other nonprofit organizations throughout the United States.
The Service-Learning Emerging Leaders Initiative is made possible through the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and is sponsored by the National Service-Learning Partnership at the Academy of Educational Development and the National Youth Leadership Council. This two-year initiative is designed to prepare a “new culturally diverse generation of service-learning leaders who are committed to working with traditionally under-served populations, schools, and communities,” according to the National Service-Learning Partnership.
Camp Fire USA is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit youth development organizations, serving 750,000 participants each year. Founded in 1910, Camp Fire provides all-inclusive, coeducational programs in hundreds of communities across the United States. By design, Camp Fire’s programs, which include small group experiences, after-school programs, camping and environmental education, child care and service learning, build confidence in younger children and provide hands-on, youth-driven leadership experiences for participants.
"We are honored to be a part of the Emerging Leaders Initiative. The opportunities for our upcoming leader, Sonia Cruz, to network, to gain and share youth development best practices and to deepen service -learning throughout our national movement will enhance our ability to fulfill our mission to build caring, confident youth and future leaders,” said Jill Pasewalk, National President and CEO of Camp Fire USA.
Sonia Cruz, Senior Program Executive, has been with Camp Fire USA since 2005. In her position, Sonia has oversight to the quality development and implementation of all of the Camp Fire USA programs. She has extensive multicultural training experience and holds a Masters degree in Psychology from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. As a part of Sonia’s role in the Emerging Leaders Initiative she will work to engage culturally diverse leaders, people, and their communities in serving-learning opportunities.
