Summer Camp Counselor
Camp Fire Heartland
Hours are generally M-F, 7:30-5:30pm (times may vary), June 2nd-August 2nd, 2014. Resident Camp is June 17-22, 2014, and position is expected to live on-site throughout that time period.
Responsible To: Camp Director(s)
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Desire and ability to work with youth and adults in an outdoor camp environment.
- Have (or be willing to receive) First Aid and CPR certification.
- Display adaptability in various situations, schedules, activities, and assignments.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision.
- Maintains a positive attitude in times of high stress.
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
- Ability to relate to one's peer group and to children.
- Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers and program implementation.
Camp counselors are responsible for identifying and meeting camper needs, providing guidance and leadership, and carrying out camp program activities. They will also be responsible for the general safety, supervision, development, and skill achievement of the participants in his/her group. Camp counselors will provide high quality, outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants.
- Guide groups and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities.
- Supervise all aspects of the campers' day including but not limited to: group activities, community jobs, meal times, and early and late assigned activities.
- Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during their camp stay.
- Develop opportunities for positive interaction between campers.
- Carry out assigned role regarding the administration and enforcement of camp health and safety regulations.
- Instruct campers in emergency procedures, behavior guidelines, and expectations.
- Monitor camper behavior and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques and redirection as needed.
- Follow camp rules, regulations, and policies.
- Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean up and chores, sportsmanship, and table manners.
- Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities and the environment.
- Maintain good public relations with campers' parents, visitors, and the community.
- Assist with the seasonal opening and closing of camp.
- Help with camp maintenance and cleanup of facilitates when necessary.
- Prepare for and actively participate in staff training, meetings, and supervision.
- Submit all required reports and paperwork on time, keeping accurate records on campers.
- Assist the Camp Director with ensuring the summer camp program is following all ACA guidelines.
- Assist in other camp tasks and duties as assigned by the Camp Director.
